südtirol.stein GmbH was founded in 2002 by Hans Karl Trojer and run as a classic stonemasonry business. Materials from all over the world were processed. However, from the very beginning there was an affinity with local natural stone, and its particularity was a fascinating attraction. Over the years, the block store of the company in Terlan contained more and more local natural stones in a wide variety of colours and structures. In 2010, südtirol.stein GmbH obtained the concession for quarrying the Mölten sandstone in the quarry on the Mölten Joch. This meant that marble, a wide variety of porphyry, granite, gneiss and sandstone from local sources were available for processing into kitchen tops, bathrooms, floors, stairs, stove cladding, washbasins, shower trays, façades and fountains.
When a basalt block weighing over 1,000 tonnes was unearthed in 2014 during the excavation for an underground car park in Siusi and Hans Karl Trojer secured the mining rights, the decision was made:

Kitchen tops made of natural stone have a long tradition. The tough material and its low water absorption guarantee resilience and usability for generations. By using a South Tyrolean natural stone, you bring a part of nature into your kitchen and decorate it with a natural phenomenon created over millions of years. For example, the porphyry from Bolzano and the surrounding area was formed near the equator 280 million years ago. Porphyry is a volcanic rock and due to its homogeneous ground mass, it radiates calm and restrained power. Other stones, such as the Passeir gneiss garnet, are more agitated and radiate liveliness and freshness. The Seiser Basalt, on the other hand, is mysterious and as if not of this world and you can experience it anew every day. Floors and stairs made of natural stone are characterised by their high resilience.
The choice of natural stone is decisive for the subsequent atmosphere of the room or staircase. Dark rooms usually require a light-coloured floor or staircase covering. In the staircase and entrance area, the covering should be easy to clean and not susceptible to dirt. The colour combination with the other materials used in the house is also of great importance. Last but not least, the surface finish also determines the character of the floor covering.

With ventilated stone façades, the building is protected from the weather and the wall structure and thermal insulation can be designed behind them as desired.
